CATALYST @ Wayne State

WHO: Catalyst is open to any University student or friend. Besides Wayne State, we'd love to have students from the College for Creative Studies, Detroit Mercy, and U of M Dearborn. Really, we're open to everyone!

WHAT: Catalyst will consist of two phases. In phase one, we will meet together weekly to learn and discuss Detroit: its weaknesses, strengths, and history. Topics will include homelessness, poverty, healthy food access, urban gardening, medical access, and race. Guests from Detroit non-profits and churches will join us to share their experience of the city. We will donate our time to many of these non-profits to get a full picture of what they're all about. In phase two, we will put what we learned into action. Each student will be given $100 to start a project of their own or help an existing service/ministry. Students will also be guided on ways to multiply this money to make an even larger impact. These projects will aim to serve the city, the campus, or both.

WHEN: We meet weekly at various locations around campus. To find out where we're meeting this week, just call us at 313-718-2275.

HOW: Interested in joining us? Have more questions? Just contact us at 313-718-2275 or email with the contact tab above.

SUPPORT:  You can support this ministry by donating to our Ministry Jubilee Fund #1218 with the Detroit Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church.  Please send checks made out to  "DAC Treasurer" with "WSU CAMPUS MINISTRY MJ #1218" in the memo to:  Detroit Annual Conference, 1309 North Ballenger Hwy., Suite 1, Flint, MI.

Maria Needs a place to stay!

My name is Maria Noth and I just recently returned from working several months in a mission Maternity center in the Philippines, and I am looking for a room to rent in the greater detroit area. I will be apprenticing a local Midwife and finishing my schooling, in the Royal Oak area and would like to be keyed into community. Please email any leads to Mariatnoth@gmail.com. Any leads would be greatly appreciated!

2011 Project

2011 Project

This past semester Catalyst read the book "Not For Sale" by David Batstone. This book told the stories of individuals who are fighting to end modern day slavery. This inspired me to concentrate on increasing awareness of child labor and human trafficking for my 2011 project. To raise awareness I will be screening the film The Dark Side of Chocolate, which exposes how chocolate is produced using child labor and human trafficking. Let the planning begin!

Who are the students in our college ministries?

Some thoughts requested for a study on college students today. Who are they? What are they like? and How do our ministries engage them?

Catalyst '09

Catalyst '09

Students gather for weekly Catalyst sessions, where they hear from local experts on Detroit and prepare for service-based projects after the New Year. Shane Claiborne's "Irresistible Revolution" serves as the text for this "mission class" and each student will be asked to create a project that claims their own Calcutta and engages a small group of other students in the work.

CATALYST InGathering

Oct 5 2009 (All day)

InGathering of Catalyst student leaders for '09-'10. Time for conversation and introductions to both the people and the process for rebuilding a service-based, entrepreneurial, United Methodist connected campus ministry at WSU.

A Midtown Detroit Student Living Center?

As we begin our pilot program for gathering student leaders from WSU into a Catalyst program for entrepreneurial missional leadership, we're also researching the possibility of a "student living center" to serve as a base of operations for a reborn UM campus ministry at Wayne State.

New Chapter is an organization that helps fraternities, sororities, and campus ministries finance and build such centers in which students can live in community and have space for program gathering, offices, etc.
